July 2023 - What has this month held so far?

This July has been the month of freelancing and markets. Having finished one month working with Building Relations, a property PR company, Katie has embraced looking behind the veil of the corporate world - and getting to work in an office space alongside other people! (Other freelancers will understand the sometimes painful solitude that can come with the role lol).

Moreover, with her small business, Lilac Cloud UK, Katie took part in the Bathgate Indoor Market over two days at the beginning of the month. She loved getting to meet customers face to face, and getting to encourage and receive inspiration tenfold from the fellow small businesses around her.

EMBRACING THE ERA OF THE MINDFUL CONSUMER

2020 Graduate Collection

My work embraces the era of the mindful consumer and the exhilarating potential of eco design.

Every day the ocean is flooded with 8 million pieces of plastic, resulting in the death of 100,000 sea mammals per year. The harsh reality of plastic’s impact on our environment inspired my research into evaluating the role of plastic within sportswear design.

Plastics are deeply embedded in the sportswear world. I believe the future of sportswear needs to incorporate the use of environmentally positive materials. The brand Sundried helped to fuel and inspire my belief that change of material usage in the sportswear industry is a viable venture.

In order for plastic to be inevitably removed from our material hanger, we need to wean ourselves off it - in an affordable and realistic manner. This realisation further inspired my practical work, designing a collection that can be digitally printed on recycled materials, including Econyl and eco regenerated Lycra.

Ocean plastic and jellyfish share more than just a floating, ghostly resemblance - they inhabit the same vibrant ecosystem. The wild, thrilling essence of the ocean moulded my design work into a collection that visually encapsulates the chaotic energy of the sea.

Vibrant colours and glitchy textures are a strong focus of my design work, capturing the dangerous, electric undercurrent of jellyfish. This theme enabled me to create designs that crackle with energy, mimicking the motion of the garment wearer when exercising. The playful, electrifying nature of the undulating forms, with dynamic colour stories and powerful contextual poses, embody the positive and exciting potential of eco design.
